چکیده

Using temperature and pressure records from Czech meteorological stations and NCEP=NCAR reanalysis series, we tested for the presence of detectable nonlinearity in univariate and multivariate climatic time series. The method of surrogate data was utilized for nonlinearity detection – results of nonlinear prediction for the original series were compared to the results for series whose nonlinear structure was randomized. The prediction was done by means of local linear models in the reconstructed phase space. None or very weak nonlinearity was found in the single (univariate) series, and pressure series generally exhibited stronger nonlinearity than series of temperature (daily mean, minimum or maximum). Distinct nonlinearity was found in all tested multivariate systems, especially when both temperatures and pressures were used simultaneously to form the phase space. Nonlinearity tests were carried out for 30-year and 10-year-long datasets and nonlinear behavior was generally more apparent in the longer versions. In addition, the tested systems showed more substantial nonlinearity when the success of shortrange prediction was used as the discriminating statistic; with an increase of the prediction time, detectable nonlinearity became weaker and it disappeared completely for long-term prediction.

Testing for nonlinearity in high-dimensional time series from continuous dynamics

We address the issue of testing for nonlinearity in time series from continuous dynamics and propose a quantitative measure for nonlinearity which is based on discrete parametric modelling. The well-known problems of modelling continuous dynamical systems by discrete models are addressed by a subsampling approach. This measure should preferably be combined with conventional surrogate data testi...

Detecting Nonlinearity in Time Series: Surrogate and Bootstrap Approaches

Detecting nonlinearity in financial time series is a key point when the main interest is to understand the generating process. One of the main tests for testing linearity in time series is the Hinich Bispectrum Nonlinearity Test (HINBIN). Although this test has been succesfully applied to a vast number of time series, further improvement in the size power of the test is possible. A new method t...

بررسی امکان استفاده از شاخص پوشش گیاهی NDVIدر تحلیل خشکسالی‌های استان اصفهان

In order to define a surrogate index instead of climatic indices for analyzing and monitoring droughts, monthly rainfall data ( period of growth from March to September) of 36 stations spread over Esfahan and NOAA satellite images during the 1997- 2003 period were prepared and processed. The climatic index of SPI was computed from monthly rainfall and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Inde...

On the Characterisation of the Deterministic/Stochastic and Linear/Nonlinear Nature of Time Series

Most statistical signal nonlinearity analyses adopt the Monte-Carlo approach proposed by Theiler and co-workers, namely the ‘surrogate data’ method. A surrogate time series, or ‘surrogate’ for short, is generated as a realisation of the null hypothesis of linearity. A measure (‘test statistic’) is computed for the original time series and it is compared to those computed for an ensemble of surr...

Testing for nonlinearity in time series without the Fourier transform.

A method to test for nonlinearity in time series, without the need to apply the Fourier transform, is proposed. This method therefore avoids the drawbacks of previously proposed surrogate techniques associated with the estimation of the signal's power spectrum. The test addressed by this algorithm is that the data are generated by a stationary linear system. To achieve this, the algorithm takes...
